Concerto for Drums

Picture
The first step in creating this song was creating custom drum beats. I added in effects and melodies that complimented the beats I used, and specifically chose ones that would sound good together. The ones I ended up using had two themes; one pop-y and one "Caribbean." Lastly, I had to make minor changes to ensure the song sounded perfect. These changes included adding effects and drops to mesh the themes into one another.

This song taught me many things about the design process including the importance of minor changes. Additionally, I realized the importance of selecting the right loops, as picking loops from the same type of synth, and using custom drum beats that both featured 16th-notes on a closed hi-hat allowed for the song to maintain the same energy throughout its entirety, while also flowing well between its different parts.

Dorian Beat

For this song, we were required to use the Dorian mode. This meant that all tracks had to be using solely notes from a D minor scale. To start, I chose a synth that would be used throughout this song. I then managed to find a bass that matched the theme and key of the melody. The song was still plain with these two items, so I then added in another melody using a piano and then multiple basslines.

This song definitely taught me how difficult it is to come up with loops on your own. Developing custom drum beats was challenging, but developing custom loops with synths and other instruments was for more difficult. It was certainly easier to develop songs using pre-existing loops, especially when the loops would create a great melody for you.

ABACA Beat

For the ABACA project, we were asked to make a beat based off of drum loops and bass loops with three themes in a certain order. To start, I found a bassline I enjoyed, and transposed a melody onto it. I did this two more times, and then added various effects and pans to make the song more interesting to listen to.

I learned that most songs start to build off of the drum loops and bass loops. Once the foundations of the song are put into place, it becomes much easier (and more fun) to add your own touches, such as additional melodies, SFX, and pans/volume adjustments. In addition to making a song more interesting in the moment, these small touches provide the listener of a song with a repetitive format (such as ABACA) a more engaging and enjoyable experience.

Cooking Show Intro

During the completion of this project, I learned how to use WeVideo, a basic online editing software. Additionally, I recieved further instruction on how to create a song with original loops. When adding the song to the video, I learned additional nuances regarding video editing and the process of creating a song that matches the mood and energy of the video.
